When it comes to energy use, heating our homes is one of the biggest contributors to the UK’s carbon emissions. As most homes are heated by natural gas which produces carbon dioxide, it’s no surprise that alternative fuels are being considered to combat increasing gas prices, reduce energy costs for businesses and homeowners, and reduce our reliance on carbon-intensive fuels like natural gas.

One of the most promising methods for heating out homes is hydrogen boilers. Hydrogen is much more environmentally friendly than natural gas and shows real promise in the move away from traditional gas heating systems and helping the country keep in line with reaching net zero as a country by 2050.

Furthermore, 100% natural gas boilers are being banned from 2025 for new-build properties in the UK. Don’t worry, though, this doesn’t mean your existing boiler is going to be banned, it just means the next time you upgrade, your boiler will be hydrogen-ready.

Using hydrogen to heat UK homes and businesses
Hydrogen offers plenty of benefits when it comes to using it as a heating source for homes, businesses and public buildings. For one thing, burning hydrogen creates no CO2. In fact, the only waste product is water vapour.

A hydrogen-ready boiler resembles a gas boiler in construction, features, and functions. Most new boilers have hydrogen compatibility built-in and many boilers are already being labelled ‘hydrogen-ready’ ahead of this move towards hydrogen. Currently, hydrogen-ready boilers can be used with 20% hydrogen and natural gas, and the plans are to make it 100%.

Hydrogen-ready boilers can easily be converted to work on 100% hydrogen during their service life. Converting a hydrogen-blend boiler into a 100% hydrogen boiler should take about an hour by a registered gas engineer as a few components need to be changed.

Increase your energy efficiency
There remain some unanswered questions and there’s still a way to go. Producing green hydrogen is currently energy-intensive, storage is difficult, it’s expensive to produce, and the UK infrastructure will have to adapt, but as the country goes in this direction, home and business owners will benefit from adapting sooner than later.

If you want to increase your home or business’s energy efficiency, save money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint, a hydrogen-blend boiler might be the perfect solution for you.
